E-COMMERCE

For the past 20 years, I have been teaching the “E-Commerce & E-Business” course, theory & lab, in the third circle of education in Greece, as well as to students from the European Union (ERASMUS+ and CIVIS) at both theoretical and practical levels. I guide our young and future professionals to face and recognize the changes of the technological revolution of the Internet, the Internet of Things, Augmented Reality, and Artificial Intelligence.  We have been participants and co-creators of this revolution in the last quarter of the century.

These changes have impacted people’s daily habits in various fields such as communication, economy, government, work, school, entertainment, and leisure time. I assist them in understanding new forms of collectivity and participation, envisioning changes in the work sector through case study analysis, and examining best practices in e-commerce at the international and national levels.

Furthermore, at labs, I encourage them to use computer applications to communicate and collaborate, follow business scenarios, use and customize communication toolstele-education, telecommuting, team management, project management, etc.

The student acquires methodological scientific thinking, enabling them to decode and depict the change brought about by the technological revolution in their daily activities, specifically in the field of commerce or, in other words, in the realm of electronic business. These activities involve changes that are either directly perceptible or not. One of the significant changes is how we manage the space of markets and commerce.

After the pandemic, electronic commerce has become the daily routine for most of the world’s population. It has created a new industrial order where the time barrier gets eliminated, and information flows quickly, creating business opportunities anywhere on the planet.

E-GOVERNMENT

I have been teaching the “e-Government” course for the past 20 years, theory and lab, in higher education in Greece, as well as to students from the European Union (ERASMUS+ and CIVIS), at both theoretical and practical levels. I guide our young and future professionals in the public sector to develop the skills and scientific thinking that will help them critically assess the national and European strategies concerning open governance, e-democracy, e-participation, increased transparency, and effective governance.

I assist them in recognizing and utilizing e-governance services provided to citizens and businesses and the role played by the Greek government and the European Union. They understand the social context shaping both our country and the world. They identify the weaknesses and advantages of eGov services at a technical, social, and operational level within the government organization.

They grasp topics such as the development and design framework of useful services for European citizens, security of electronic transactions, identity and authentication issues, personal data protection, GDPR, e-public procurement systems, the benefits of open-source software, interoperability, service co-design, and how technologies are integrated into citizens’ daily lives through smart applications and services, making cities increasingly “SMART.”

Methodological tools include the study of case studies and the analysis of best practices in e-governance services at an international and national level.

Furthermore, they learn to use computer applications for communication and collaboration, following business scenarios (using and customizing communication tools, tele-education, telecommuting, team management, project management, etc.) in public sector entities, as well as developing and implementing operational scenarios and simulations.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

I had taught “Database Management Systems (DBMS)” theory, and laboratories, one of the fundamental components of computer science, for about 20 years in higher education in Greece. Students should understand the basic concepts of database systems at an introductory level. They get familiar with the fundamental data structures, data modeling and operations, Entity-Relationship (E-R) model and Structured Query Language (SQL), access and manipulation of databases. Finally, practical laboratory exercises provide economic and administrative applications related to the analysis, the design, and the implementation of databases.

To achieve the concept understanding of Database Management Systems by the students, I wrote the book “Databases and Data Management” with my colleagues Ioannis Leventidis and Vasiliki Siafaka in 2006, ISBN: 978-960-931699, 151 pages.

The material is accompanied by supplementary electronic files (software), exercise examples, auxiliary table files and appendices, as well as self-assessment exercises on the subject matter, which constitute the educational software by using Microsoft Access relational database software.

The book consists of two volumes: “Exercises Guide for SQL, A Series of Examples, Volume A,” 52 pages, with SQL examples, and Volume B “Learning Guide for Microsoft Access,” with exercises and examples for learning the basic tools and how to manage entities in a relational database, 97 pages. Volumes A and B follow the principles of open & distance education, and aim to enrich traditional teaching.

However, they can also be used as self-study guides in distance education and as a learning manual for practice and self-study. Each chapter specifies the expected outcomes. For each example included in both volumes, the educational objectives are defined, and the basic concepts are elucidated. The material is designed to allow the reader to interact at an independent time and place.

The book has been distributed for several years in Greek either as a printed manual https://service.eudoxus.gr/search/#a/id:7719/0 or for free in electronic format through the asynchronous distance learning platform “eclass” https://eclass.uoa.gr/main/portfolio.php within the framework of the “Databases and Data Management,” LAB COURSE of the Department of Economic Sciences at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It was distributed as a textbook during the academic year 2010-2011 at the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of the Ionian Islands, Department of Sound Technology and Musical Instruments, in the course [B.203]: DATA AND ALGORITHMS IN SOUND, https://service.eudoxus.gr/public/departments/courses/2226/2010.
